Hello!

My name is Aidan Mahoney, and I am a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science (Advisor: Dr. Brian Soden). I study tropical cyclones (TCs) in observations and numerical models, with special concentrations in TC thermodynamics and long term predictability. In addition to research, my coursework has included classes on Hurricanes, Vortex Dynamics, Predictability, and the General Circulation of the Atmosphere. I have also served as a graduate teaching assistant for a tropical meteorology course and an introductory python programming course.

Since May 2020, I have been a Pathways Intern at the National Hurricane Center’s Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch. For this internship, I have been trusted with a wide variety of operational duties, including as a Surface Analyst/Forecaster, Hurricane Support Meteorologist, and Impact Based Decision Support (IDSS) Forecaster. I have also conducted applied research into TAFB’s tropical wave diagnostic tools. In 2025, I fully transitioned from research to operations a suite of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) diagnostics that objectively analyze tropical waves, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and Monsoon Trough (MT). This suite of tools was developed in close collaboration with my colleagues at the University of Miami. It is an incredible honor to be able to serve the American People as an intern while completing my education.

I graduated in Dec 2021 from Cornell University, with a major in Atmospheric Science. My coursework included classes in forecasting, atmospheric dynamics, instrumentation, microclimates, python programming, and applied science communication.
